Institute dedicated to the treatment of autoimmune diseases

An autoimmune disease is a malfunction of the immune system

What is an autoimmune disease?

These are chronic diseases that result from an inappropriate response by the immune system. Rather than protecting the body, the immune system attacks its normal components.

Examples include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, Sjögren’s syndrome and polymyositis. These seemingly very different diseases are all autoimmune diseases.

The vast majority of autoimmune diseases are multifactorial. It is believed that they are caused by a combination of genetic, endogenous, exogenous and/or environmental factors, with a few exceptions.

Autoimmune diseases

A public health issue

Autoimmune diseases represent a major public health issue due to their increasing prevalence, the significant rise in the cost of their treatment, the uneven distribution of research funding, and the lack of coordination and standardisation in diagnosis.

An institute dedicated to the treatment of autoimmune diseases

Drawing on the expertise of Montpellier’s scientific and medical research teams — recognised in France and internationally for their excellence in autoimmune diseases and cell therapy — the University Hospital, Inserm and the University of Montpellier today launched Immun4Cure.

Certified in 2023, this University Hospital Institute (IHU) has a roadmap for understanding our understanding of diseases caused by an overactive immune system, optimising patient care pathways, enabling earlier detection, and implementing innovative, targeted therapeutic strategies to treat and ultimately cure these diseases. To achieve this, it draws on a network of local, national, and international partners and areas of expertise.
